When I paint, I am a virtual architect, inventing fictitious elevations in a Pretend Dimension. The scenarios I paint are like stage-sets, backdrops for human activity, narratives in which the banal, the vernacular, and the folkloric become larger than life. Each work inhabits a “playful physics” of elastic perspectives and personalized geometry, with stacked and flattened planes building an environment. Surfaces are composed of flickering patterns, eccentric drawing, and free-form hand-marbleized patterns or coated in pastel and hothouse hues. In South Florida I am perennially inspired by the porous frontier where stylized tropical flora collides with the streamlined forms of mid-century modernist architecture. Other sources for my work come from fashion and textile design, graphic design and typography, and specialized vocabularies such as early camouflage, Arabic calligraphy, Bargello needlepoint, furniture design, window display, cartoons, curio cabinets and more.
Painting is the point of origin for my varied projects, but I am frequently tempted into interdisciplinary collaborations. I’ve also undertaken large-scale projects for interiors and architecture as a natural extension of my studio work. My painting practice surges into the realms of design – rugs, tiles, wallpapers and more.
Painting is energizing. It is visible thought, and as such, flows freely across platforms.
